Lang's inspiration for the L019 residence was to achieve harmony with nature. The design features white walls, wooden oak floors, and local limestone for bathrooms and chimneys. The careful detailing creates an atmosphere of sensitive luxury, with precisely composed views determining the free-floating L-shaped living space.
The unique property of this design is its stark contrast between the white body and the rough natural stone cladding on parts of the facade. The ground level opens up to a large garden and two widely covered terraces with a fireplace. The upper floor houses the sleeping rooms for the children and a separate area for the parents. A sunken courtyard and a large skylight let daylight into the basement with an indoor pool.
The L019 residence was realized using a reinforced concrete structure that is highly insulated and clad with plaster walls and rough stone. Large steel beams enable the cantilevered roofs. The open floor of the ground floor can be divided by large sliding doors, allowing the family to adapt the space to different occasions.
The design project, which started in 2016 and finished in 2018, was a challenge due to the large volume of the building in a neighborhood of smaller houses. Lang overcame this by dissolving the volume into three wings with large cantilevered roofs. The design strategy focused on light and shadow, orientation to the sun, and different garden spaces, which determined the orientation of the rooms, their form and size, and the arrangement of windows and walls.
Lang's L019 residence is a testament to his design prowess and ability to harmoniously blend luxury and nature. The residence, which has been lauded for its strong technical characteristics and splendid artistic skill, showcases a remarkable level of excellence and introduces positive feelings, amazement, and wonder.
